The prospect of the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria is not just a concern in the Middle East but is also causing deep unease in London and other Western capitals.

While Bashar al-Assad is no ally of the UK or US, a takeover by an extraordinarily effective and apparently well-resourced Islamist rebel force, who might gain access to Syria’s strategic weapons cache, would upset the status quo in the Middle East with potentially disastrous consequences.

This would be a challenging situation in the most peaceful of times but, in case anyone needed reminding, the world is enduring its worst period of instability for decades, with North Korea and other countries joining Russia’s side in the war in Ukraine.

It also throws up all sorts of uneasy shifts in power dynamics: a toppled Assad may flee to an allied country like Iran or Russia, leaving Syria no longer linked to Tehran.
