No. of Paragraph 13

If people undertake good deeds, God bestows His blessings by helping them get the companionship of good Acharyas. Sri Ramanujamji said in a discourse that hearing Godly deeds and stories is a “tapas” and is also the easiest. Prahlada says hearing is the first step of the nine steps prescribed for devotion. Srimad Bhagavatham says King Parikshit derived divine blessings by listening to sage Sukha. Sage Yagnya Valkya says in Brihadaranya Upanishad that hearing is a necessary process for self-realisation. Uthukkadu Venkata Kavi says nothing is impossible through listening to the story of God.

A verse in Swetasvatara Upanishad says (yasya deve para bhakti:) that a person showing devotion to God will get more clarifications on sastras by showing the same to his Guru. Saint Thiruvalluvar says listening is the wealth of wealth and the greatest of all wealth (selvathul Selvam — kural 411). Chandokya Upanishad narrates Guru’s greatness through the story of a disciple called Upakosalan. He rendered for 12 years the service of protecting three Agnikundas for the performance of homas and pleased with it, the three Agni deities, satisfied with the service to his Guru, taught Upakosalan about self-realisation and asked to hear further from the Guru. The Guru Jabali was delighted and taught him all the vidyas.

Without Gurukrupa, there are no blessings from God. Without God’s blessings, there is no devotion; without devotion, there is no liberation. Without liberation, there is no peace of mind.

Without Guru’s blessings, Goddess Mahalakshmi will not shower her grace. ”Guru Arul Illaiyel Thiru Arul Illai”. Goddess Mahalakshmi is also a Guru who recommends on our behalf to God. The invocation starts, “Lakshmi natha samarambham ........ vande guru paramparam” — starting from Sri Mahalakshmi, I pay my obeisance to all the Gurus.
