Seventy-five years and 16 days after the capitulation of Nazi Germany, retired hospital executive Gary Fybel is sitting at his laptop in San Diego, California, writing a letter that will change his life. And mine.

It's seven-and-a-half decades after the end of World War II, and I suddenly have a new family.

May 2020. Gary can see the Pacific Ocean from the terrace of his house and, on a clear day, as far as Mexico. "I hope," he begins, "that this letter reaches you and that you are doing well. I am writing to you as I came upon your Yad Vashem memorial statement for Ernst Ries. My grandmother Käthe Ries Feibel (Fybel) was Ernst's sister."

He was born on July 16, 1885, and then arrested in Berlin on March 3, 1943, before being deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp. "Ries, Ernst Israel," No. 487, the officials noted on the transport list, followed by a thick penciled check mark. Just like the other 1,000 or so Jews who were sent to the gas chamber immediately after their arrival.
