It would not be an Olympic Games opening ceremony without at least one blunder but in the land of the Tricolore, Paris provided us with three.

Games organisers offered a “deep apology” for introducing South Korea as North Korea, the Olympic flag was flown upside down and some viewers spotted an alleged rogue testicle during one of the many dance-based sections of the night.

The most serious error came when the boat carrying the team from South Korea appeared on the Seine and was announced as “the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” the name for their northern neighbours. In some parts of the world, such as Dakota, mixing up northern and southern sectors would not be a heinous mistake. In the case of democratic South Korea vs the North’s dictatorship it is a rather more sensitive issue.

When North Korea’s team emerged they were introduced with the same name, i.e. correctly but by then the damage had been done. The South Korean sports ministry said it would be making “strong complaint with France on a government level”. The ministry expressed “regret over the announcement... where the South Korean delegation was introduced as the North Korean team”.
