Two minor siblings drowned in the Kengeri lake in Bengaluru on Monday evening while attempting to fetch lotus flowers, said the police.

The rescue personnel on Tuesday recovered the body of John Srinivas, 13, while a search was going on to find her sister Lakshmi, 11. They were residents of Kengeri and children of Nagamma, who works as a sanitation worker with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

According to the police, the incident happened around 4.30 pm. Though no one witnessed the incident, the police suspect that Lakshmi was plucking lotus flowers in the lake when she accidentally stepped into a 15-foot-deep area. Srinivas tried to rescue her using his clothes. When that proved impossible, he jumped into the water to save her but drowned, the police said.

Nagamma, who is a widow, lives in a house next to the lake. She was at work when the children drowned. When Nagamma returned from work, she searched for children and eventually found her son’s clothes. She immediately informed the police helpline and the fire and emergency rescue personnel rushed to the spot.
