Bulgaria is a key country for Hungary, especially since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, because it is the only sure way to ensure that the necessary energy supplies reach Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in Sofia on Friday, after talks with Bulgarian President Rumen Radev.

He recalled that last year, 5.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas arrived in Hungary via Bulgaria, and this year, seven billion cubic meters, while total consumption is nine billion cubic meters. Bulgaria is also currently supplying the fuel needed to run the nuclear power plant. The Hungarian Prime Minister congratulated the Bulgarian president on the progress made towards full Schengen accession, while Rumen Radev thanked the Hungarian EU presidency for its work in making accession possible.

Bulgaria plays a key role in the transit of Russian natural gas supplies to Hungary, therefore it is of the utmost importance for the government in Budapest that gas transit through Bulgaria remains stable. Last year, 5.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas arrived in Hungary via Bulgaria, so far this year, 3.9 billion cubic meters.
