FARGO โ€” It looks like a record year is in the works for northern Plains wheat growers as a wheat quality tour wrapped up this week with impressive yield estimates.

The Wheat Quality Councilโ€™s 2024 Hard Spring Wheat and Durum Tour concluded Thursday, July 25, after three days of surveying a variety of cereal crops across North Dakota and portions of South Dakota and Minnesota.

Over the three-day tour, a total of 257 fields were visited by attendees, with a weighted average of 53.8 bushels per acre. The average yield for spring wheat came in at 54.5 bushels per acre, with 237 fields being visited. While the average durum yield clocked in at 45.3 bushels per acre after visiting 18 fields of the crop. The tour recorded two fields of hard red winter wheat with a weighted average of 51.4 bushels per acre.

The 2024 overall weighted average is higher than previous records dating back to 2009, according to data gathered by tour participants. The average of 49.5 bushels per acre is the next closest average recorded in 2015.
