No. of Paragraph 11

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has voiced his support for a Nigerian coach to lead the national team, rather than a foreign tactician.

His comments come as the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) continues its search for a permanent head coach, following the appointment of Austin Eguavoen as interim manager for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Troost-Ekong made his position clear during a pre-match press conference, saying, โ€œIโ€™ve always said that having a coach from Nigeria is an advantage. Someone who has been in our shoes and understands what weโ€™re going through can bring that experience to the team.โ€

His remarks follow the NFFโ€™s failed attempt to appoint German coach Bruno Labbadia after Finidi George resigned from his role as Super Eagles head coach in June. Despite the efforts to bring in a foreign coach, Ekong emphasized the value of a local manager with a deeper connection to Nigerian football.
