KUWAIT CITY, March 28: “Ghabqa is a wonderful Kuwaiti tradition that brings us the blessings of Ramadan,” reports Al-Rai daily quoting Turkish Ambassador to Kuwait Tuba Nour Sönmez. Sönmez made the statement in a gathering she organized recently at her residence during which she affirmed: “In Kuwait, I feel like I am at home.” A huge crowd of Arab and foreign ambassadors and diplomats; in addition to several officials, citizens and members of the Turkish community attended the event. Addressing the guests, the Ambassador stated: “Here, we come together to go beyond borders and cultures. Together, we celebrate in the spirit of unity, compassion and contemplation. As someone who has lived the month of Ramadan in different countries, I can confirm that being away from home during this blessed month arouses feelings of nostalgia. Fortunately, I am in Kuwait, which is rich in traditions that make me feel at home.”

She also pointed out that “Turkey is famous for its vibrant Ramadan traditions, festive atmosphere and lively events. During the month of Ramadan, Turkish cities come alive with colorful lights adorning the streets; and markets are crowded with shoppers buying special foods and sweets for breaking the fast. In Kuwait, we gather almost daily in ghabqas and diwaniyas. We see children dressed in ‘girgian’ costumes, distribute sweets to them, and enjoy traditional Kuwaiti dishes during iftar and suhoor.” She added: “Behind the colorful customs lies the essence of the blessed month of Ramadan. It is more than just a month. It is a time for self-discovery, compassion, and renewal. As we fast from dawn until sunset, we empathize with those who are less fortunate. This enhances feelings of compassion and commitment to helping those in need. We find ourselves in the middle of this holy month, so let us embody its full spirit and carry it with us throughout the year.”

She concluded: “Allow me to end my speech by quoting the Ramadan statement of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, ‘Let us make the most of the merciful atmosphere of Ramadan by imploring Allah Almighty to put an end to the suffering, systematic atrocities, torture and oppression in various parts of the world, especially in Palestine’… Ramadan Kareem!”
