A grandmother was forced to sell off some of her possessions to replace a broken lawnmower and suffered “six miserable years” as she couldn’t afford to do anything after her state pension age was changed.

Audrey Gillan, who is now 68 and lives in Kirkintilloch in Scotland, is one of the estimated 3.8 million Waspi (Women Against State Pension Inequality) women who were affected by changes to the state pension age.

For some women, it meant an increase of up to six years to the age when they could retire on the State Pension.

Waspi campaigners argue that many women were not adequately informed of the change to the State Pension age by the Department for Work and Pensions before it was brought in. In March, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman recommended that women affected are owed compensation from the Government as a result.
